1081 A.D. = In Battle of Dyrrhachium, Normans was defeated by Byzantine Empire.

1356 A.D. = In a disastrous event a 6.0 to 7.1 magnitude earthquake destroyed the town of Basel, Switzerland.

1867 A.D. = United States of America formally takes possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million.
